I hope you know about the 5 S’s 

Hi all, 

I’m back with another bit of advice for parents of newborns.  This is to get familiar with Dr. Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Sleep Longer, with over 1 million copies sold.  This book is a classic, first published in 2003.  I can tell you that among sleep consultants whenever we are comparing notes about what to teach our clients about the newborn phase, the 5 S’s of soothing always, always are top of the list.  The 5 S’s helped me a ton when I was overwhelmed by new parenthood.  

The 5 S’s of Soothing to Activate your Baby’s Calming Reflex: 

  1. Swaddle 
  2. Shush
  3. Side
  4. Suck 
  5. Swing 

Watch Dr. Karp put these 5 S’s into action in this video:

These tools activate the calming reflex, leading to better sleep. They serve as good sleep cues. They’re easy to use and easy to wean off when the time is right. They will boost your confidence as a parent, because soothing your distressed baby will make you feel amazing.
