After a recent trip to India, I thought I’d share the supplements in my arsenal to stay well and support my digestion while traveling. On a two-week trip you don’t want to spend one week sick with Delhi belly! I know from unfortunate previous experience that it’s NOT fun.
My main goal is to make my gut a place that is inhospitable to bugs. To accomplish this, here are the supplements I take:
1. GI Herbal Formula: this is a potent herbal antimicrobial formula, the same formula that Dr. Lipman uses in his Cleanse. It contains herbs like berberine, grapefruit seed extract and black walnut hull that are anti-microbial and anti-parasitic. People have fantastic results with it on the Cleanse, and I think it’s brilliant to bring along for travel to nip any bugs in the bud. Dosage: 2 capsules twice a day.
2. Probiotic 225 by OrthoMolecular Products: this is an excellent probiotic formula that does not need to be refrigerated! Very handy for travel. It contains 225 billion cfu. Probiotics populate your gut with good bacteria to crowd out the bad guys. I do NOT count on yogurt for probiotics – I don’t consider it nearly potent enough, not for India. 1 packet / a day mixed in water.
3. Mycoflora: Mycoflora is Saccharomyces boulardii, which is a good yeast (in the way that probiotics are good bacteria). S.boulardii is particularly good for travelers diarrhea. I take it as a preventative during travel. 2 capsules/ day.
If you can’t get your hands on GI Herbal Formula, I would recommend at least finding a grapefruit seed extract supplement at your local health food store.
I hope this helps you to stay well during your travels – and avoid having to take any strong antibiotics like Cipro which have side effects.
